c220 lock - driver's side

I have a c220 1995 and have problems with the driver's door lock.

I have had intermittent problems after owning the car for 2 years but the dealer never rectified it fully but just gave me new keys.

In the 2 years it has been totally inoperative. It works fine on the passenger side and the trunk but turning the key(s) on the driver's side nothing happens- the key moves. I suspect that the actuator of sorts does not work or a wire is disconnected.

Upon removing the door pannel, I could not see anything amiss. Got scared off to remove the window altogether to have better access.

It's frustrating to open the car always by the trunk or passenger side.

Any ideas on how to have this correct.

Thank you for the help in advance

Hi,
Common failure on these locks is the exterior lock barrel becoming detached from the spindle which operates the internal part of the lock. The spindle is attached by a small roll pin which drops out.
To remove the lock barrel pull aside the door rubber seal level with the lock, you will see a hole which gives access to the allen screw that holds the lock in place, unscrew it and remove the lock;if the spindle is attached i'm wrong and you need to look elsewhere; if the spindle is not attached it will be hanging loose in the internal locking mechanism, carefully remove it with pointed nosed pliers ;it should just pull out; do not drop it or you will have to get a replacement or dismantle the door to retrieve it. You can then refix the spindle with a replacement roll pin or preferably a split pin ;which won't fall out in future; and reassemble the lock to the door.
Hopefully problem solved.
Geo.

I have a 95 c280 with the same problem. When I took mine apart the spindle wasn't detached, it was broken in half, thus the key wasn't turning anything. I don't know if you can buy a spindle so I may have to fabricate one. This could be your problem too. Its not a big deal to take it apart, just pull the door seal up and there is a hole that is in the inside of the lip from inside the door toward the locking mechanism. Just take a 4mm hex and keep turning until you can pull the lock out. The hex screw can't fall down because its sandwhiched in the door.

be careful, that hex CAN fall out and get lost in the door.

I'f you cannot fathom a way to fabricate a fix, take your VIN # to your dealer and have them order a new one, I believe cost is somewhere around $70. I had a friend I just put one in for that had the same problem. 1995 C220...

Thanks guys, I am about to undertake the same task this weekend. This is on the c220 also. Hopefully, it is just the pin. Do you suppose a little locktite would be ok here?

adios, Opossum
