95 E420. Code 17

Check engine light, code 17: "Lower Engine Operating Temperature w/ Coolant Additives "

What does that mean and what are the implications?

I had a coolant flush two weeks ago. Could these two things be related????

Where are you getting that code? Sound fishy to me.

I too find it skeptical that the engine computer would address coolant additives.

If there was ever a dealer "suggestion", that has to be it! Sorry, but it's pretty funny at your expense.

Maybe I've assumed to much; Who told you that?

In the future, you can read the codes on my pages.

Physics lesson

No additive can alter the temperature of the coolant. All it can do is alter the temperature at which the coolant boils or freezes.

To some extent additives can modify the surface tension of coolant and (separately/related?) reduce the likelihood of cavitation.

I doubt an ECU is smart enough to analyze those characteristics based on a coolant temp sensor.

Errrmmm, Jim..... I got that description from your webpage.

I now have three error codes: 17, 19 and 26. Do you think it's time for a new chip? Do you still have them?

That was topic #17. You need to click on topic #6 - DM DTCs - then down to code #17.

Sure, I do but check out your 'vacuum' lines since #26 usually is due to a vacuum leak. Most likely a cracked line due to age??

Also how's you wiring harness?? Has it been replaced??

I bought the car three months ago. The salesman promised to get all the records from the previous owner but he failed to do so. So basically, I ended up with an eleven year old car and I know nothing about what has happened to it before August 2006. I guess that means: no, the wiring harness has probable NOT been replaced.

My harness was replaced with one made by Delphi - it was easily identifyable by looking for the tag near the brainbox (computer box) just before it enters the box.
