2000 E320 SRS Light

As I'm learning about some of the common problems with the 210's in our "new to us" car, I'm wondering if these cars have problems with the SRS system as well. A couple of days ago my wife told me the SRS light was on. So after a little playing around I discovered that it goes out if someone is sitting in the passenger seat. With no one there it comes on again. The airbag off light comes on like it should with no one in the seat and goes off with someone sitting there. I've got the car scheduled for a shop visit for this problem Monday morning but was curious if this was a common problem with the 210's. I would guess it has something to do with the passenger weight sensor, does this sound like a good guess?

Thanks,

Dale

Strikes me as a reasonable guess.
I've heard of some seatbelt buckles causing a similar problem.
P.S. How much does your wife weigh?

Seatbelt buckle....... what an awesome idea manny, I hadn't even given the buckle a thought. I'll go out and just buckle it with no one in the seat and see if the light stays out......Thanks manny, You da MAN!!!!!

ok, I just went out and buckled the seat belt with no one sitting in the seat. Airbag off light still illuminated and the SRS light is still on. So I put pressure on the seat with my hand, the airbag off light went out along with the SRS light, lifted my hand, both lights came on. So it appears the seat sensor is working, or at least it detects weight because the airbag on/off light is working as it should. The problem is with no one in the seat the SRS light comes on. hmmmm, why would the airbag on/off light work fine detecting weight, but yet the SRS light comes on with zero weight..???

I had seen that thread after doing a search several days ago, his problem is exactly opposite of what mine is doing. His light only came on when someone was in the passenger seat. However I believe that the chaffed wire theory could still pertain to ours. Removing the leather on the seat!!!!......UGGGGGGG!!! I should know in a few hours what code is present in the SRS system, we dropped the car off last night for the shop to get to first thing this morning. I'll be sure to let you all know.

Thanks manny, and now that I know your height, my money is definitely on my wife.....

The problem was the seat recognition sensor, of which I've already purchased. One question I have is Alldata doesn't mention anything about removing the seat, all it says is to remove the leather and cushion. Does anyone have any experience with this and does the seat have to be removed to replace the sensor or can I somehow remove just the cushion and leather? I've briefly looked at it and am not sure how to get the leather and cushion off without physically removing the seat.

TIA,

Dale
