300E Dumping fuel?

I've noticed that when I keep my key in the access. position for and extended period of time(listening to the radio),then start the car, I have a very rough idle and a fuel smell(like the car's dumping fuel) can be detected on my clothes afterwards. After driving the car for a few minutes this problem clears up. Can anyone give me any feedbac on what this sounds like? It's a 1986 300E with over 200k mis. on it.
