Problems with starting 95 E320...
I have problem with starting my 95 E320. It happened to me sometime 2 weeks ago (for the first time and then never again- after about 10 tries it started) and then again yesterday (and since then and gives me the same problem all the time)
The problem is that I try to crank it up but it wont start. ( I hear the engine click but it won't ignite) However, I manage to turn it on only when I shift from the Parking position to Neutral ( thats where the gear has to be to allow me to crank it up. I don't know if its the aftermarket alarm which has the remote start feature (which I don't really use) interfering with the Mercedes one or if it is something else non alarm realated... Any help will be appreciated Thanks in advance |

Sounds like the Neutral safety switch is defective.
Will it start in " Park ", when you wiggle the shiftlever while you're holding the key in the crank position? It looks like this: http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1XC0ZKQX91Y60QIC7D&year=1995&make=MB&model=E-320-001&category=J&part=Neutral+Safety+Switch

It wont start if the lever stays at the "park" position even if I "wiggle" it alittle bit. It has to go on " N " position and then when I crank it up and it starts.....
If a let it run and drive it for a little bit when I turn it off and then try to start it back on , it will start from the "Park" position. But if a let it for a while I have to start it from "N" again... By the way where is that Neutral switch located at? Last edited by 95BenzE320; 11-20-2006 at 01:26 PM. |

NSS is on the side of the transmission, but up pretty high. Too hard for me to access while on my back under the car, so I let my Indy change it and replace the shift bushings 2 years ago. Recently had the same problem you described. Would not start after sitting overnight without shifting into "nuetral". Rest of the day it started oK in "park". As of late, this seems to have resolved itself and it has been starting in "park". Keeping fingers crossed.

You will need to replace the transmission safety switch.
I had the same problem recently. |
