I have already unplugged at the resevoir thinking that would kill the light but it stayed on---where could the problem be between the plug and the light?
and why does the light come on when I touch the brake?

Float is just absorbing fluid now so is too heavy, not staying up, needs sensor. Unplugging sensor and light staying on is normal. You jump the 2 wires together for the light to stay out. Low fluid light coming on when braking is just due to the movement of the float, it's just borderline right now.

Would the sensor also be called a check valve--I'm trying to look the sensor up on fastlane parts

Joel,
http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1VP11CKBY1YC0TTTA5&year=1987&make=MB&model=300-DT-002&category=P&part=Reservoir+Level+Sensor

As you might be able to make out, the Category is "Body Electrical" and the part name is Reservoir Level Sensor.

Good luck,

-Larry

Another possibility would be the "bulb out" indicator bulb being inadvertantly put into the "low washer fluid" bulb position when the dash was out.

I really appreciate the helpful suggestions. I have disconnected the sensor(top of the resevoir and the light still comes on. I have placed a wire from one side of the plug to the other as suggested and the light still comes on. I have checked all the lights to see if I have one out and I don't . I have also replaced all fuses with new.
There is another electrical issue with this car. The rear defrost light is constantly on. I replaced the switch and no help.
I will replace the resevoir level sensor tomorrow-------any other suggestions? any ideas about the rear defrost light?
Car has 195k mi
thanks
joel
