Red face 1994 e320 Reverse Clutch Replacement (im gonna do it myself.. i think)

Does anybody have detailed instructions or a manual i can download on the replacement of the clutches in my 722.3 transmission? I have no problem getting the transmission out of the car but from then on I need some instructions. The car is a 1994 e320. I have tried searching the info but have not found specifics. Are there any special mb tools I will need once inside the transmission? Thanks in advance for your help. You guys are the best. benjay

Talking

I have come to that conclusion based upon reading numerous other peoples accounts on this forum of the same problem with the same car.

Symptom: Transmission works flawlessly. Reverse is there one second and gone the next. All forward gears work as does park. just no reverse. Linkage is ok.

Everybodys whos posts I have read have opted to have the job done by someone else. Is it really THAT hard? I can understand the normal joe not wanting to rip the trans out because it takes a while, but thats no big deal to me. Just once the trans is out and on a bench Ill need some instruction. I was also wanting to know of any special tools I might need.

Considering the amount of people that have reported this problem on this forum, This is a very common thing for these cars. Mercedes must have published some bulletin or repair info for their techs to guide them thru this procedure.

this is not necessarily the reverse clutches causing this problem.if it was you would have reverse but it would slip when trying to use it.there would appear to be a problem with the reverse piston from your description.this could involve taking apart the front pump assembly which contains that piston and replacing two or more seals.it will always be a good idea to replace the reverse clutches when in that far but i dont think it will fix your problem by itself.

Question

thanks for the input . What you say makes perfect sense. I have just heard that the piston sticks which causes the reverse band to snap eventually. Either way you are correct because I will probably want to freshen up some other things while in there so I dont have to rip this thing out again soon. Do you know if mercedes makes a rebuild manual for this trans and how i can get ahold of one?
