its essentially the same engine but its not going to be a direct swap. the later motor has more electronics- I'm not sure if the trans will bolt up directly or not.

The 84 is a 500 and the 89 would be a 560.

i have done this before.if you remove the intake from the 500 and fit it to the 560 it will be a direct swap with no trouble.overhaul the intake before you fit it.

I hate to mention this but....

Be careful Johnjzjz, I dont know what state you live in, but if you're in some states, like here in California, it's illegal to put 1984 engines into 1989 cars, because the emissions laws require all cars basically to have smog controls at least as newas the model year on the car's body, so, in this example, the 1984 smog controls on the '84 engine, wouldn't be satisfactory for a 1989 bodied car and you would need at least 1989 or later smog controls for the car. Check the law in your state, otherwise you could end up with a car that you can't drive.

You need to check further with the DMV in your state before you do this change.

Good luck and welcome here

the only thing you are doing is swapping a 560 long block for a 500 long block.it will still pass the emmissions when you are finished.the engines are physically the same size and you will be the only one who knows what you have done.it would take an expert to know whether you changed the diff ratio or the engine.good luck.
