e420 electrical gremlin

I was sitting in traffic today and noticed that all the instruments in the cluster were dead and the ABS light was on,and I could hear a humming noise.I switched the key to OFF and tried to restart but it wouldnt crank. Some of the lights in the cluster would not come on when I turned key to the ON position. Checked fuses, disconnected , reconnected battery, nothing. Then after several minutes I turned key to on(all lights in the cluster came on and I was able to start it and drive home like nothing ever happened.Any ideas???? The common link seems to be a dead cluster and no cranking from the starter. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Possible the combo relay. Located in the fuse box panel. You will have to unscrew the rear plastic cover in order to get to the relay.

Authur,I think my twisting of the fuses is what got the car started yesterday. I have been meaning to replace all the fuses for some time now ... today I replaced every fuse in the car, I found fuse #5 ( stop lamp, instrument, roof light, cruise, tach ) to have a hairline fracture in the element. I tried to start the car with this fuse removed and experienced the same symptoms I had yesterday... problem solved! Thanks, Dan
