Problems with W203 2001 models?

Hi all, I read in one of the posts to skip any W203 2001 models. What are the problems with this line? I recently purchased a 2002 C320 wagon from a reputable dealer. It was made in 2001 in Germany (thats what the carfax report listed). It has 36500 mi on it. It was certified pre-owned in 2005 with engine, electrical and brake service done (but I don't have the actual service record cuz I bought it at a non-MB dealer). Should I be concerned? What problems do I look out for? I will take the car to a service shop recommended by some folks here this week, and I want to be able to articulate what to inspect and stuff.

Thanks

-kimmy (first time MB owner)

I have known several early W203 owners, and they have had quite a few problems with the modules that control the power seat, windows and locking mechanisms as well as HVAC problems (the little doors that control air flow and other problems) and some emission control difficulties. One owner had many problems with the lighting system, but I haven't heard of that from anyone else. That owner has also had the SRS warning and other electrical problems (wipers, seats, windows, locks) and had some ignition system problems as well.

A relative of mine had a 2001 C240 that had pretty much everything that could go wrong. Multiple SRS problems, poor idle, HVAC control problems, repeating window/lock/seat module failures, key recognition problems and some suspension problems. Their car was bought new and most of the work was done under warranty, but they got rid of it before the warranty expired, fearing the possible repair bills.

Another friend of mine has a later C240 4-matic and it's been very good mechanically and only a few problems related to the HVAC system and some phantom MIL occurances. I'm sure that there are good examples out there (the vast majority) but the W203's are a bit of a gamble when it comes to getting a trouble free car.

I have a 2002 C240, very few miles.

Before I mention my problems, the fact you mentioned made in Germany as opposed to a Brazil made vehicle I think is GOOD. Also with the mileage you have many potential issues could/should already have made theselves apparent.

Many people have had an ESP - electronic stabilty capabilty on slippery or high power driving situations - this is repaired by some work on the wiring harness. This repiair once done should present no more new problems.

I have had a few light/security/autolocking sensor problems most fixed under warranty, the one that wasn't cost around $400 for a new module installed.

Very IMPORTANT, these cars requires a GOOD battery, I change out my battery every four years on this car. If the battery is NOT fully charged all kind of weird malfunction warnings occur. I think one of the reasons I was having electrical issues was due to a worn battery that the first dealer didn't catch - one reason the car had so few miles.

Also a great site for investigating Mercedes repair and maintenance is
www.mbWholesaleParts.com search for the STARTUNED link and use the search for you car model. Startuned is an official Mercedes site for mechanics

Another pure 203 model site is www.mbklasse.com if you play around at this site you'll see issues owners have had, and lots of the forum members drive their cars extremely hard.

Overall my C240 is an unbelievable car, it is one of the quietest cars I have ever been in. A wagon version normally creates a bit more boom sound form the cavernous space in the rear.
Be sure you research what tires work well on the vehicle when it is time to replace them.

Finally, what I like about the earlier 203's is the fantastic dash display, the big orange readout of the display is so easy.

Overall the C240 was a very good purchase for me, I don't regret it at all.
