1989 300E starting problem

I have a 1989 300E. I just installed a new voltage regulator a week ago and the car ran great with no problems. Today I put a full tank of gas in and then I went to work. 10 hours later I went to my car and there was a very strong smell of gas. When I tried to start the car it would crank but not turn over. I tried about 15 times and then it finally started. It ran really rough in the begining put when I punch on the gas the car ran well. When I drove home the ABS light was on in the instrument cluster.

When I got home I turned the car off and then started it again a minute after and the ABS light stayed on and the car started fine. I also notice that the RPM's are around 600 when the car is in park.

Could this be the alternator and if so how do I test it?

Thanks,

Fab
