Starter Problems
Greetings Forum Members,
I posted a request for help with a starter problem on my 1985 280sl. I could hear the starter solenoid rather noisily engage but the starter didn't turn over. I suspected a bad starter and replaced it only to experience a quiter solenoid with the same no turning over of the starter. I need help diagnoising this problem. Where is the relay that controls the starter and how do I check it? Also how do I check the ignition switch function? These are the new suspected culprits. Thanks, Knarf

280SL won't crank
Assuming the battery is in good condition ,Get a wrench on the crankshaft bolt at the front of the engine and try to turn the engine over!(make sure to turn only counterclockwise as seen from the drivers seat!) If it won't turn the engine is seized or the torque converter is seized to the front pump.

Mike,
I just jump started the car from the started terminals, so the problem must be electrical, a broken wire, bad relay or ignition switch . I recall a simular problem many years ago with another MB and replacing the ignition switch solved the problem. This problem started with a slight delay in starting and having to hold the key in the start postion an extra few seconds before the engine would turn over, then 4 or 5 seconds and now no response at the key. Neutral Safety Switch?
Neutral Safety Switch? Move the transmision from P to N and try to start the car.
