I was about to acquire the Manual CD - but told my W126 wasn't covered by the CD. that the CD world begins with 1988 models. I imagine I will still find plenty info that applies.
Anyone know about that ? Among the things I need to do in the car...I pulled out the radio and cigarette lighter assembly to reach into the upper console and discovered along the way why the lighter was not working - a previous owner had clipped the power to it. there are several unattached wires lurking in the dark back there... l suspect most are stereo cables. What would be the color of the lighter wiring ?(there is one pair, red &black/with red that look like a possibility) Last but not least..this process began in order to fuss around with the air circulation knob(the one on the right not the blower knob on the left). it seems to get stuck and I am unable to move the air into the different ducts- above or below.the AC air does come out in force through the central ducts. The duct in the passanger lounge throws plenty of hot air no matter if the AC is on or not. Any Ideas ? thanks for the advice. |

There are a ton of posts on the AC and ventilation questions. Suggest you do a search.

1987 300 SE ....
Hi Chuck,
Regarding the AC/Ventilation I actually had done a search earlier - there are ofcourse different circumstances all the the time because of Chassis # , engine & year model modifications... I thought I might luck out with one of these posts I occationally see..." I had exactly the same problem.." Nevertheless I'm still looking for help on cigarette lighter wiring and CD manuall info. Thanks again |

Your 126 IS covered by the CD shop manuals. The first link is to the W126 overview, the second link is to the PartsShop where they sell the CD's.
Which model specifically are you talking about? According to the overview the CD's cover the 10 year run of 126's 1981-1991. http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/ServiceCD Hope these help in your quest. [Edited by MikeTangas on 05-08-2001 at 01:11 AM]

1987 300SE ...
Hi Mike,
From the overview it does indeed seem that my car model is NOT specifically covered. Mine is a 1987 300 SE. the overview picture seems to indicate the 300SE only from 1988. Would you be able to check the actuall CD when you have a moment ? (and let me know for sure) . thanks Am still looking for info regarding Cigarette lighter wiring..... |

Well,
I don't have the CD, was only looking at the overview. One thing you can count on though, the 126 chasis (basically all chasis #'s) remain fairly static through their run. It is almost certain that the wiring for the cigarette lighter is unchanged from 81 to 88 (and probably to the final run). As the production of a given chasis evolves there may be a few changes, but for the most part things stay the same. And as you point out, according to the overview the 300SE only starts in 88. What is the production date of your car? It should be stamped in the placard on the driver's door pilar. (note, my 108 is registered as a 73 but was built in 72 - try finding parts for a 1973 W108 [they don't exist])

Gidpor,
Do you have a US car? The CD manual covers US versions of the W126. You talk about AC knobs. All US W126 cars came with ACC which has buttons, not knobs. The manual will help you with most procedures, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't cover non ACC systems. As for the lighter, look for a cluster of 4 wires. Two go to the lighter, two go to the little bulb in the ashtray. I'll look up the colors when I get home. You might check the Haynes W124 manual available in English in the UK. It might have AC info that you can use. I have the book and I'll see if it has anything on the problems you describe. Another source is the W116 manual. I know the paper copy has both AC and ACC. I also have that volume but I find it difficult to understand. More than a bad switch, I suspect that whoever did the hacking in the console disturbed the vacuum hoses. Regards, Sixto |

Mine is definitely a European car. I had assumed (bad thing to do, ha?) that the console controls would be the same...
thanks for letting me know how wrong I was...I guess I should hold off getting the CD Manuall after all and look for a regular old paper version. It just sounded so nice and compact to have the CD. I will also look into the Haynes UK vesion. thanks again for the input. |

Gidpor,
For the US 88 model, there is a black and gray wire and brown wire pair that goes to the lighter, and a gray and violet wire and brown wire pair that goes to the ashtray bulb. I hope that helps sort out your wiring problems. As for the AC, the Haynes W124 manual has nothing on AC system controls. The non ACC W116 has slide controls so I wouldn't even bother. If you're interested, I can email to you a couple of vacuum diagrams out the W126 CD that might help your find the problem. Regards, Sixto 91 300SE tabijan@yahoo.com |
