I believe that I have a bad water pump on my 86 190 2.3. What else should I replace when I replace the water pump? Belt & tensioner?

I'm also planning on doing the valve stem seals on the same car. Same question, what else should I replace at that time?

The car has about 130k.

Timing belt? I think it has a timing chain?

At any rate, yes, I would change all of that while you are in there if you do not know when it was last changed/never changed.

Ah, I was thinking about the serpentine belt...But if the timing chain is easier to do at that point I don't see why it couldn't be done.

Folks don't typically replace the timing chain when they do the water pump. But I suppose you could. If it's like the M103 (2.6, 3.0), the chain is very long lasting.

Change thermostat and flush cooling system (if not done recently). If MB Coolant is used, you are good for 3 yrs. until your next coolant flush.

change only whats broken, as the saying goes, don't fix it if its not broken or you'll be asking for trouble, I've been working on Mercedes benz as a collector for 18 years now, and have learned my lesson the expensive way.

just do the oeriodic preventive maintenance and your good with it.

Make sure you change the short hose from the top of the water pump to the thermostat housing.

Listen to the last post by Cool. I have just gotten myself into a hell of a mess by fixing something that did not need fixing. Leave well enough alone. Change the short hose, theromostat, serpentine belt, if needed, and add new fluid.

Does this short hose tend to leak? My car is in the shop right now and I'm hoping it is just a leak at this point. I've changed the other two hoses and am praying its not the water pump. I just found out about this little return hose. You can't (or its hard) to see it.

Sounds good. I really don't even want to do this work, so I have no problem with staying focused on what needs to be changed

What makes you think the water pump is bad? Isn't the metal impellor fixed to the shaft?
