My 1989 420SEL is doing the same thing. I was going to try changing the switch in the door jamb.

There should be a switch on the light itself. You can set it 3 ways.
1. light when you open the door
2. not light when you open the door
3. light whether the door is open or closed

ok guys heres the scoop.there is a warning module mounted to the steering column under the dash.it has a diode in it so that when you open the drivers door to move the seat[without turning on the key]that the power will not feed back.the module has gone byebye.prob find that opening pass front door will still turn on the dome light.

Just for your knowledge Marinos. The rear light works only off of the back door and the front lights work only off the front door.
