W202 Auto Gearbox Transmission problem - advice required

I own a 1999 c230K and recently I have been suffering an intermittant problem with the auto box - It drives ok for a while and then when you come to a halt, it would appear to be stuck in 5th gear. If you then move the selector to reverse, there is no reverse gear and no drive in any of the forward gears. Switching off the engine and restarting seems to cure the problem.
This seems to be intermittant and you never tell when it is going to happen......the only tell tale sign being a harsh change from 1st to 2nd, and when this occurs, I know the problem is about to repeat.
Can anyone please advise on this problem.....is it gearbox or an ECU problem.
Also on this model, where is the Engine ECU and the Gearbox ECU located ?
Many Thanks

First step is having the trans ECU scanned for codes!

Trans ECU is inside the car, in the passenger footwell area beneath the carpet.
