I inherited a 500SEL which I drove for the first time today and there's this constant whining noise coming from somewhere in the trunk. Is this the fuel pump? Vacuum pump?
I tried a search but I haven't been able to find any other threads on this. Someone please tell me this isn't normal, it's driving me .Other than that this car seems very nice. Just gotta get me some Euro lights!

It may well be a fuel pump on the way out, have a listen to the right rear (from the back of the car - LHD passenger side) when the car is started, but stationary, you should be able to hear the pump whirr but not whine.
Cheers

It could be a loud fuel pump, but that doesn't necessarily mean its soon to fail. It may whine like that for years before failing.
