You can also get an indication from the upper radiator hose
The thermostat shouldn't start letting coolant through until the engine hits 87C. If the top hose gets hot much before that, it would indicate a faulty thermostat. You have to start checking when the engine is cold, of course.
I don't think replacement is difficult, just you need to replace the housing and thermostat as a unit.
