1992 400E ticking when in reverse

I have a 92 400e with 175K (2nd owner) and have maintained the car very well. I have a ticking sound when in reverse and mechanic is saying its a clutch plate? or something to this effect (says could be just the front or front and rear components) he is stating $1600 (if only front) to $3800 in repairs depending on the severity...can anyone shed some light on this? Is this accurate? He says common, as he has done it twice to his 300e with 300K on it. Is there a lower cost path to fixing it? I do trust them as a shop but know they are towards the top of the cost factor index for an independant.
