Red face 1990 420sel sun roof time

just-n-time here,Well another well greased track system on an MB bites the bullet. Miss Debbie was on a trip and used the vent side of the roof, when it broke. This is not, all that hard a job, but it is sometimes an anger point, when you have failed to clean those tracks. Then of course it is even more maddening when you tear into it and find that some one, thought axel grease would work just as well as an $80.00 tube of slide grease from MB! I did order a unit from a salvage yard so when it comes I will show you pics of the unit,But for now the pics of broken and unbroken.

Oh yeah that was a fun repair! That grease is cheap compared to all those parts! After spending $600 to replace 90% of the parts up there, my dad gave me a hard time for getting the MB grease. I was like I just spent $600 freaken bucks I'll grease it with whatever MB tells me to use!

I hope to say,my point exactly.Though I did score mine for much less but still, how cheep is the grease when you look at the parts? So the time it takes to clean the system,Saturday might be a good day!

Rusty sells more then enough grease to lube an entire dry sunroof for $10. Give him a call for one of his tins. Less is more, it just attracts dirt.

I did my entire sunroof which was new so totaly dry, and I still have over half a tin left.

don't feel alone.this happens to 90% of the 86-91 126 bodies out there.it's about a 4 hr fix if you have the parts and have never done it before.one word of warning make sure that before you tighten up the bolts to the roof panel that you use some kind of reasonably accurate way to make sure that the gaps on either side are equal.this will save you many bad words.

Oh, yeah, I'm there right now. Once I learned how to get the lining off without being able to open the roof, it all became clear. Waiting on used parts. The end of my cable guide was bent, so I have to replace it (dangit).Chin up!

Our was down on one corner the right side track broke.I was able to force it down enough to make it slide back a little at a time, though I now have to repaint the clear coat from scratches, some are to deep to just sand out. Your job sound like you mite need another pair of hands, for you job! Though I wonder how the end of the guide got bent?

Cool sun roof finished

Well gang sorry it took me so long to post end results but alot of junk came up,you know! The Reconstruction of the sun roof went along well, but a few things needed attention, in one of the photo's you will notice a red past looking material on the guide track in head liner, this is high temp silicon,I used it to reattach the guide for two reasons, first it is in an area that when sitting out in the sun will get hot, and two I would like to keep it in place without buying a new unit, the tab's are all broken off.I did try some other types but this is holding better.

The last portion of this I must apologies for I do not have a photo of the stitching. The side curtains on the interior panel came lose from the head liner,So I had to stitch them into the area of there original attachment, job done. Well I added the picture perhaps you can see the area of restitching.JNT
