I just had my headgasket done on my 300CE, it cost about that much , and it can go more because theyre going to find other stuff wrong with it. Is it worth it ? I say if the cars in good shape hell yeah. where else are you going to get a good solid riding car for $2400? I felt like my cars got a few good years left in her so I spent the dough, besides you dont see to many 300CE.

Quit being cheap and fixer up and get back on the road.

Thanks. I will recommend that to them. Yeah, I do not want it. My next MB will be a low mile, well-maintained diesel.... 79-87 S-Class.

Not sure which HG... I just asked dad what was wrong and he said head gasket was blown according to his sister... they had alread bought a new M-Class anyway, so I think they were planning on selling it anyway, but was possibly going to keep it.

It is located in South Carolina.

Which headgasket, or are they just going to yank both heads? Its not very common on the M119 no.

Its probably a really good car, heck where is it give it to me and I'll fix it!

i'm more frustrated with the combination of the first 2 posts, and that is "you" in general, not you specifically that upset me. The "you's" who have older MBs and complain about maintenance, and that because a 90k car needs a 2k gasket after 12 years, that "MBs are crap after 5 years"

"86560SEL", a guy only asks questions and talks. Drive a 380SE, but he does not want to maintain it at all.

All of "86560SEL" post repeated the same thing again, again, and again. I am very tired of this guy.

Cost is reasonable on the M113 V8

Book time is about 24 hours for both heads. Yours is probably around that, could be a little more.

I am very tired of people who think they have the right to be condescending to others, this isn't the first time a similar comment has been made by the same person towards "86560sel".

No it's not about me, it's not about my preference, I'm telling you the way I see it and the way the world outside of this forum works - from my point of view: an S class depreciate so much faster than more sensible Mercs like E and C class... yet they have a lot of things that are about to go wrong at this time. Taking that into account by the time 2400 is dropped into the sink the S will break somewhere else.

At public auction you can see A LOT of S classes, 7 series and Jaguar XJs because these over-the-top creations are good for .... well you guessed it the first 5 years. People who are rich enough to want one won't want one used, those who have a new one has no intention to maintain the car they are going to sell to the used car lot 5 years down the road. Sounds tragic but that's how the richer people think - shame that the S class won't get the care they'd give to a Maserati Quattroporte. You will be much harder pressed to find a well maintained S than a well maintained E or C. The fact that your aunt has driven the car overheated (assuming so) until it wouldn't move I don't think I'm exaggerating one bit.

Besides, think of it this way, if you have the engine broken open, by you or by a MB mech (I hope not), a lot of parts will inevitably need replaced -

valve cover gasket
cam seal
valve seal
head gasket
sparkplugs

then as a MB nut (or general car nut) you'd want to:

deck out the block and the head for perfect adhesion of HG
adjust the valves
change valve seals

it all adds up. If you are talking about Mercedes dealer doing your engine I would bet on Schumi coming back out for F1 for 2007 than to bet your engine actually come back out of the dealer anywhere near 2400+ tax.

you don't have to agree on me. But it'd be bad if anyone suggested he go for it, paid like 5000 bux for the hg job, and then a year later the piston rings bite the dust....or the transmission just leave this guy sitting in the middle of the intersection.

2400 on a 14000 car.....I have tried that too many times. Don't do it.

Yeah that drives me nuts to. I just point to a Ferrari, after 5 years you need to cough up $5k to have the T belts changed. I think the higher entry fee that Ferrari's command fix's that problem.

I am not sure who all "you's" you are referring to. I do not see anything wrong. I simply asked if $2400 seemed reasonable for a HG replacement on a 95 S500.

I see. I think it was someone after me that mentioned that "5 year crap thing, not me. I know that older MBs have high maintainence costs.. I was never complaining about that.

I think my original post was misread, because all I wanted to know is if $2400. seemed reasonable for this cars HG replacement and yes, they bought the car new in January of 1995. I did not know if they were giving my aunt the runaround- or if it was really like a $1500 repair, etc- or if $2400 was pushing it.

What was really disturbing and callious was the reply after yours. It was strange to say the least. Like someone with a very short temper. Lifes to short here on this earth to "get tired" of someones posts, like that person stated.

I am over it now... no hard feelings. Discussions like this are bound to happen in places like this.

Okay people, I am new here but I have been on a LOT of forums before and I can see what will happen here because it happens everywhere.

The guy wants to know if the cost is reasonable. IS IT?
Answer the question and move on. He didn't ask for people to point fingers at him and others. He didn't ask for all your opinions on how good Benzes are and whether you think they're worth the costs, he asked whether the cost was reasonable.

The point is that the guy who started this thread did NOT ask all of you to come and insult him and eachother, he asked a question. If you wan't to insult eachother and debate whether a Benz is worth the maintenance costs, there is a create new thread button that lets to argue about it all you want, and no one will stop you.

I kinda' like the fact that my W126 S-class's are pretty much done depreciating...

I'm not convinced that EVERY 1992 & up S-class has been ignored maintenance-wise, but there surely are more than a few out there where the repairs or scheduled services have been neglected once the car was out of warranty.

On the other hand I have heard of W140 cars that were for all intents and purposes permanently parked by their original owner when, the 1st time they went into a Dealership after the warranty expired, an "estimate" for some needed repairs or service was presented... Driving in and having that little "problem with the Merc" taken care of under warranty and looking at a $4K tab to have the air conditioner worked on are concepts from two different galaxies for even some of the "rich". I imagine that a $2.5 to ?K head gasket might occasionally have the same result.

People with a lot of dough either got it the "old fashoned way" (they inherited it!) or they actually earned it! Neither condition has to include the propensity to "Just pay the man, Dear!".

p.s. I KNOW what my reaction would be if my 1st (& current) wife were to sashay in one evening and announce she had just Mastercharged a $3,000 repair bill because they "told" her it was needed.
