2001 S430- changing trans fluid- 722.6
First I do not remember that I have a torque converter drain plug though the russian part site shows one and one dealer parts man in the MB Club magazine said there was one. Anyone know?
It is important because it affects how much and possibly which kind of fluid to buy. which fluid? At one point it took 001989210310 at $12 a qt. Later fluid is 001989450310 at $6 a qt. If I have a drain plug perhaps I can use the new fluid and need to buy 10 qts. If I cannot drain the converter should I put the original type in (prob 3-4 qts) to avoid mixing fluid? Can the 2 fluids be mixed? |

buy the original MB trans fluid at $10-12 a quart. don't even try a cheaper alternative. it could spell disaster for your trans. I don't think your model year has a torque converter plug, it wouldn't hurt to check. mine had one (97e420) with same trans, it drained about 8 quarts if i remember correctly. make sure you change the filter and buy a pan gasket just in case the old one needs replacing. some recommend putting in a magnet because it doesn't have one. maybe some of the experienced tech could advice you on that.
P.S don't even think about those fluid exchange pumps that some chops use good luck! |

The drain plug for the torque converter disappeared about 9/99 and the magnet appeared sometime in 2001, April I think, but I'm not positive.

Use only MB fluid.
You can't drain the torque convertor, but for the rest you can follow my DIY guide based on my 722.6 transmission in my W210 http://mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=23969 As for the torque convertor, you can replace whats in the gearbox and sump, re-attach the pan, run the engine for a few miles, and then drain some more off - if you do this twice you'll get most of the old fluid out. Or you can disconnect the ATF cooler pipes, run the engine, and flush the system that way by pouring new fluid in as the old stuff comes out. Please note that I've only heard of this being done on other cars, and not an MB. |

As far as the quantity, mine took four quarts when I had it changed last month. I believe it can take up to eight if flushed completely, but MB does not seem to recommend that for some reason--based on what my SA told me. He said they use MB-supplied software to do the change and it is all automated to do it there way.

Parrot- can I access that site with my usual login?
I had trouble logging in. Do I need a special MB UK login?
