Red face W124 / M104: Code 3 on pin 8

Hi guys,

My car is running perfectly now but I was just curious and read the flashing fault codes. I got code 3 on pin 8: "Intake air temperature sensor".

Question is what am I suppossed to do with it? The car is running perfectly and I don't feel like replacing a sensor or something just because I got the code.

BTW, where is that sennsor located and what is it for?

Thanks guys,

Juan

You're wise to not throw parts at the car. Erase the code, then reread after a few days. It's not unusual to get spurious codes (engine hiccup). I don't always have luck erasing codes using the 6-8 sec holddown after reading, so I disconnect the battery for a while.

the intake air temp sensor is in the air stream before the throttle body and if unplugged will throw code,or---if car has been started with sensor unpugged it will store code until erased.

Along with that , check that it does not have a fuzzy film on the element ..that also pops that code.

Thanks for the imput. I already ereased the code once and got it back the next day. Is it easy and a good idea to remove the sensor and clean it with contact cleaner or something?

Thanks

Clean the plug and connector pins ..then give the element a squit and blow it off w/air.

If you have an ohm meter, I can give you the temp/ohms specs.

As Poole said, that codes usually triggers when someone changes plugs or another repair that requires removal of the sensor and they forget to either remount it to the crosspipe or they don't plug the connector back in......
If you clear the code , turn key off for 50 secs and then On for 10 before starting the engine...
