1990 300 Sel

Hi guys.

I am about to purchase a very nice 300 sel with 198k that's not running. It apparantly ran a few months ago before being sidelined for the winter. Almost perfect exterior with new euros and very nice interior. No leaks or other major issues.

Here's the problem. The car cranks over almost wanting to start and then will completely stop cranking with no response from the key. Dead silence. It will do this again and again after many attempts.

The owner thinks its a fuel filter relay issue or possibly a bad cap/rotor. What do you guys think? Even though it's a good deal I don't want to buy a liability. He has lots of records and the car has been meticulously maintained.

We probably think that you left out the most important bit of information, namely the asking price! It better be very low.

Seems like a contradiction. Meticulously maintained, but it doesn't run. There are a bunch of things that could be wrong. With the engine dead, you can't check transmission, Heating and A/C, etc. etc.

If it were me, I would insist on going through all the records. Make notes. Then post them and ask for advice.

Steve

it's very possible that the piston is stuck in the fuel distributor, especially if been sitting for a while.pull a plug and see if black and fouled.sounds like car getting way too much fuel.

I agreed to buy it for $2700 assuming it will run fine after the cap/rotor or relay is put in like the owner thinks. It recently had $5k worth of bodywork and paint done as well as a new head gasket $1.2k and truly is in great shape. Apparently the car was running fine just before it was put up for the winter and has decided to not start now. I will walk away from the deal if it can't be started or if it's something major.
