Mine was severely worn at around 100k miles. The car was cutting out randomly. Changed the plugs did not stop the problem. Replace the cap and rotor and everything was fine. It was a bit tricky to remove the bottom allen bolt on my 91 300E.

I did the virtually the entire ignition system at around 150k in my 88 300SEL. Wires, cap, rotor, and coil now for the first time since I've owned it it runs silky smooth...

I did mine as you did, Chris at about 150k - at the time the car was exhibiting the same symptoms you mentioned, Loubapche - that is why I was wondering as to whether there is either an MB bulletin or common knowledge on timely replacement -
like there is on Spark Plugs, Fuel Filter or a Transmission Filter to name a few....Hopefully someone knows. 1987 300SE Euro |

150k seems a bit extreme for sure. I did the M103's ign on my chum's 300E with around 130k on the factory stuff, it was VERY worn. I'd run no longer than 50k on a cap + rotor.
