One leads to another, then BAM, another AMG

While researching the paper trail of my 280E AMG, I found and talked to Richard Buxbaum, ex-Founder/ex-President of AMG of North America. We talked about my w123 AMG and about a few other general questions regarding AMGs, and at the end of the conversation he tosses in “Do you know anyone who’s interested in a 500SL AMG with a 5-speed? Immaculate with only 45,000 miles and one owner. A friend of mine.” Short answer – “YES!”

So here’s my new car. Full original AMG documentation and receipts to prove its pedigree – all installed in Affalterbach in 1983 (some receipts are in Deutschmarks and in German), then imported to America. Engine kit (polished/ported intake, polished/ported heads, hotter cams, larger exhaust manifold), 5-speed transmission, exhaust kit, suspension kit, body kit, wheels/tires, and special-ordered SEC seats.

In a neat little twist, the car’s original sale date was April 13, 1983 – so I officially purchased it today, April 13, 2007. The car has never been wrecked, painted, altered, or driven in the rain/snow. The AMG steering wheel shows up in the paperwork, but is not on the car, and the original Penta wheels were replaced in the late 80s with the MonoBlock 17's.

Anxious to get the thing home, hammer on the local tollroads, and browse through the paper trail. I never thought I'd end up with two of these.

These photos are the ones the Seller sent to me:

I'm glad to hear the wife let you get the car. It is awesome, but you need that steering wheel and might consider returning it to its original penta wheels.

Now you have two awesome 80's AMG's. No fair ;)

What a beautiful car!

Who are you anyway, James Bond? :D

Amen brother. I want to do both of those ideas - I like your taste (I'm more crazy about the standard 500SL spoiler than the wing, by the way). And yes, it does have the Torsen limited slip - gotta keep those wheels planted.

While they were working on it, AMG Germany called the original owner and asked if he wanted it geared for top speed or for acceleration. Seller answered correctly - "acceleration".

Beautiful ride! Scored by a guy who knows EXACTLY what he is getting.
It's REALLY rare to find one with that much documentation and history going to such a worthy custodian of the car.

It was *very* wise to jump on this one. A lot of research and a little bit of luck. Like with your 280, sometimes it's just wise to go for it, when you are certain of what you are getting.

A geared for performance, mint, low mile, unwrecked 107 manual 500 is the holy grail, this is the best of the best. Knowledgeable will SL owners will bleed with envy. This one is so good, that you could make a credible argument that it's an investment, I would say.

You've very quickly acquired a wonderful stable of unarguably authentic vintage original AMG gems.

I would like to see the dyno figures for this one.

I didn't want to offend anyone, but I completely agree, that wing HAS to go. While the classic 80's look is cool, removing it would make it a timeless classic. I can't wait for more pictures and maybe, just maybe one day seeing that wonderful machine.

Holy mother of God. I've never liked the r107 all that much, but this has me drooling. And a 5 sp too, incredible find.

Got some engine pics in today. I'm flying to Florida Monday evening and check out the car Tuesday morning. Then I need to arrange transport to Texas. I'm getting itchy to plop my ass in that driver's seat.

I think you will notice that on the valve covers is a decal stating its a stage 1 modification;)

G-Benz 04-17-2007 12:44 PM

Is that wing an AMG component?

I would try to score some Pentas, but the monoblocks look awesome! They need to stay on the car!

I'm envious! Why can't I find out about cars like this!??? Congrats!
