Fan on 126

1987 560SEL 126w

How do I get to the blower fan (for a/c and heater) mine is starting to go bad. How hard is it to change out. I guess I would buy only the motor as the complete assembly is way high.

Thanks
John1

W126 blower assembly removal

Hi, if I remember correctly, underneath the passenger's side of the dash there is a carpeted knee bolster; find the couple of screws holding it and remove it, and underneath there is another black plastic cover; you will find the blower assembly underneath this. You may have to remove the small carpeted kick panel on the right side as well; I don't remember. Just start taking the underdash stuff off, and you will get to it; there's really nothing to changing it out. Take 3 or 4 screws out and the assembly drops toward the floor.Be careful with the fan blade; seems like it is expensive new (there are lots of used ones if you break it). The motor when new has a little resistance to the shaft turning in the bearings; turned out there was nothing wrong with mine probably. Seems like I read the brushes in the motor wear out and they quit; it would be worth it to check this before you buy a new motor. They are available from several places on the Internet (Phil on this web site, for example). Hope this helps you; have fun!
