Opinions on BEST head gasket for '94 E320?
 

I am getting parts together to replace the head gasket on my wifes '94 E320 wagon. The car has 115,000mi on it. I purchaced a VICTOR-REINZ head gasket but I can't see where the sealing ring is supposed to be for the FAMOUS oil leak area between cyl 5 & 6. Is there a PRESSURE oil port in that area? Is there a "BEST" head gasket?
Can the head bolts be re-used? I don't have the torque setting... Can someone tell me? Other than cleaning the head and block surface, does anything else need to be done?

Only the "Elring" brand has the needed reinforcement...

Using a heavy weight oil, ie; 20W50 adds to the leakage problem.

No sealers are needed for the head gasket, but this job involves removing the upper timing cover. This timing cover requires sealer. Check the link Arthur Dalton provided, it names the specified sealer.

The head bolts may be reused, depending on how much they've stretched; there's a specification for this. Torque is 55 Nm + 1/4 turn + 1/4 turn.

Considering how much you're going to dismantel, you might want to consider a "few" other items that are easier to do at this time, rather than when it's all reassembled.

1] EGR tube to intake manifold - remove and thoroughly clean out
2] Water pump - or at least flush the cooling system
3] Hoses [esp one a back of head and 2 under the intake runners] and vacuum lines / hoses
4] Chain guide and tensioner

Wish I had known about the above [and ones I didn't mention] when I had mine done.

Bob Weir... Thanks also, I am replacing the water pump and going to flush the radiator. I will check and replace the hoses too as you mentioned. The engine only has 115,000mi on it. Do you think that I need to replace the tensioner and guides too? Chris

I really don't know the "longevity" of these items or the condition of yours. The parts are about $100-125 and I'd just R&R them now while they're easy to do.
