500SL Neutral safety switch

Hi Everyone I have a rarely driven 1992 500LS which for the second time I believe has a faulty Neutral Safety Switch. Any advice on which replacement brand is the best, where best to buy and the technical steps to replace it (how difficult a project is it)? Thanks

I'm only aware of the OE one, I think they are the same ones for 500Es as well. .... pretty easy to replace if you have a lift, or access to one.

nuetral; safety switch

Before replacing try this: Switch is on drivers side transmission housing. Spray switch and mouting plate with WD 40, this will clear the loads of gunk that builds up and may klhelp. good luck, Abe G PS this worked for me.

Replace it ..it is a mechanical/electrical contactor switching device and time/use wear them out..also change the shifter bushing while you are there b/c that also wears, cost pennies, and you are there anyway...
Remember , it is giving you fair warning...when it does finally go , you get a tow that winds up twice the cost of a new NSS..

You can buy both parts right here from this Forum.. If your NSS is faily new ,[as you say it was changed before] it may just need the bushings, ..they may not have changed them when they did the NSS..if there is a lot of slop in them, you may want to try that first.

I suppose it would be nice to have a lift but better yet would be having tiny hands, skinny fingers, and quarter inch drive sockets - very tight working quarters.

Yeah...kinda surprised they didn't put an inspection plate in the tunnel on that one. They are not bad after you do a couple..also, good info for a first-timer is you have to rotate the plastic locking ring to unplug the connector..I see guys fight to get that plug off til I tell them to simply turn the ring ..
