103 spark plug change

the plugs on the 260e had 63k miles on them... i have only had the car for the last 3k.

anyway.. i had some Bosch resistor plugs.... thought i had bought the non-resistor...but they had run out..

bottom line is...i changed them out today while waiting for the oil to suck out..

the car runs fine..

the others were Autolite... the gap was huge...some of the threads had some oil on them...i guess that might be consistent with the need to do valve stem seals.

the plug tips seemed to have a little ash on them...

anyway the cars runs great....

i think the number is HRD9C.... it's the right plug, except for the R.

i still have 6 non-resistors in the shop for the CE

The HRD9C were the ones I had in my CE for 3K miles without any problems, then I read a lot of threads here that they can damage the engine, so I chickened out and replaced them with non-resistor ones bought at Autozone (Autolite).

Now Lee just did the other way round .

I'd hunt down some non-resistor plugs. You should still be able to find NGK's in NR. These ignition systems can handle a big gap, however with the high mileage I would run something on the tighter side to help any fouling in the future.

When was your cap/rotor/wires done last? I often see that overlooked on M103's.

Well, once that happens best order up a new set of wires/cap and rotor as that's what's getting worked Over time.

Worst case you'll be ordering up a new coil as well.

FWIW, you'll be fine with the Bosch HRD9C.

I would have qualms about using Autolites even in a FoMoCo product. IMO, the only thing worse would be Champions.

for the record:

in the last 3 days...

the 300e got Autolite copper core

the 260e had the Bosch resistors replaced with Autolite copper core

the 300CE got the last 6 Bosch H9dC's (this car will be eligible for a high mileage award by the weekend, completing the hat trick)

I threw out the Bosch resistors with 85 miles on them... i still have 6 more if someone wants me to mail them to them.

It appears that the 104s are also resistor plugs. http://www.********.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php?catalog=15&partnum=104&a=FR15-104

Lee, what do you think? Did we dump the BOSCH HR9DC for probably inferior ones of the same type?

The 260E had Autolite's in it for the last 60k miles,

In July of 2003, this car had the wires replaced (beru) and autolite 104's.

Take that for what it's worth. I have the service records from when i bought the car.

Instead of HD9CO or HD9C Go with NGK. Go to www.clubplug.net put in part# BP5ES pay $1.80 a plug and small shipping fee and in days you got plugs, gap is .032 put them in and your car purrs. Its simple

Put in part number in box on upper right side.

If you go by model / year it recommends a resistor plug & you know better than that
