Did the W140 homebrew blower regulator work out?

From this thread in the parts section:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=76998

I just realized that the thread was buried in the parts section, but it is quite a technical discussion so I thought it appropriate to resurrect it here.

Jim or Ken, what were the final results of this exercise?

Brett

Hi Brett -

I posted a DIY on this a while back, I think it's on this website. I've got one laying around somewhere I'm sure I could locate if someone really wanted it.

I also cut one up, and sure enough there was just a big TTL transistor but I've completely forgotten the specs. I think it was a 10:1 bias rated at 100 amps? I took pictures of the insides as I recall; pretty sure they can be had at Radio Shack. I would have made a point of documenting this a tad better if I knew there was such interest - my memory is shot nowadays. Drugs from the 60s I guess

But as you know you can get the entire unit, fan and all for like $100 at Potomac. The DOA guarantee is good enough for stuff like this. I recommend those guys with confidence, remember he shipped a 70k mile 119.980 to me on a pallet for like $1400, still had some accessories on it

If your any good at breadboarding electronic circuits, try this one. It's much better and the fan will run better too.

Nah, I don't need one. I already bought one a while back, but I thought it would be of great interest given the certainty of failure of the regulator, if one could document a $2 repair or $15 reproduction that was reliable. The discussion from the parts forum seemed to just die without resolution.

I know Jim is still around, so I was hoping he would have some info. Maybe I'll just PM him.

Brett

There was some activity in the thread yesterday (5/25/07) but I think the bottom line is that it's just to difficult to 'package' a blower regulator. Post#33 has some info on a rebuild 'success'.
