The car has the updated relay. I took it out and tapped it this morning. That seems to have fixed the light on/key off. I'm still getting 17 flashes on the diag plug. I'll tinker more today and post an update later.

That is a good indication that the contacts are bad in th OVP..they are sometimes sticking closed , which also would mean they are sometimes not conducting, which would bring up that communication code you have.
Might just want to clean the contacts, but I would just buy a new one .
You are a Radioguy, so take the top off and have a peek..

My 1989 300Ce does this occassionaly as well.

I haven't even tried to figure it out.....

Not as big a deal on yours ..but he has HFM/SFI full electric Engine Management, so a bad OVP will raise hell with all systems,

What is OVP? My CHECK ENGINE LIGHT is starting to come on (quivering) when the ignition is off (no key), but turns off when the car is started. It runs fine, and does not hesitate. Any input would be appreciated.
