Particularly:
"In my experience, problems with M112 valve stem seals are virtually non-existent. The only time I've ever replaced them was as a pre-caution, when the motor was torn down for other repairs. All the oil burners I get at my shop end up needing new piston rings, at best. I've seen plenty that needed engine blocks/pistons too."
Yeah, saw that one, thanks. My tech said the same thing. However, many of the M112 and M113 engines are only now getting up into the higher mileages and I wonder how long the seals will last, and whether things like this will begin to surface? My M103 still had original everything at 300,000 Km+. I don't think these engines will fare as well.

I am hoping it is sludge build-up and that the cleaner/additive will flush it and help improve the problem. The consumption/smoke is still very minor, but I want to tackle it now. Like I said, I've only seen the smoke on startup twice since I bought the car this past spring. It doesn't show any smoke while driving, or when starting after sitting overnight. It's only been after it has sat for a couple of days or more.

uberwgn - thanks, my tech has an additive they use just for this purpose. He said sludge build-up on these engines is common, esp. if the intervals have been long. He recommends changing oil every 10,000 Km and the tranny fluid every 50,000 Km. I'm inclined to agree.

I hate to toot my horn, but my engine doesn't use a drop of oil between oil changes.

I was thinking of a conversation with my neighbor a while ago. He is the tech at the local Mercedes dealer (Penske Mercedes), and he told me that when the new / current V8 engine came out, you know the 5.5 liter DOHC V8 in the E550's, etc., he said that same were using a ton of oil, and they found the rings weren't seating.

The fix was for the techs to take them out and beat the **** out them....run them at a very high rpm for up to an hour. Apparently, it worked.

"Yes, officer, just check out this forum here....here's the post...really...I'm just seating my rings!"

Yeah I asked Bill (webmaster) about his E430 and same thing. Zero oil used between changes. His has had nothing but synthetic and I think he also changed the oil at lesser intervals than the FSS required.

Mine went on average 17,000-18,000 Km between changes. I don't know if it had synthetic at first or not. It did later on, as of around 60,000 Km.

I drove the car today and watched it closely. No smoke at all. Let it sit for a few hours then started it. Nada.

So I'm hoping that perhaps the de-sludging will do the trick. Maybe I'll throw in a late night, high-RPM highway jaunt for good measure. For the engine's good, of course.

I'd look into MB's FSS lawsuit. If the dealer used dino your engine may be covered until 150k miles. Well in the US, I'm not sure about Canada.
