W201 2.3 8V electronic idle problems
I am working on my 1984 190E. I've corrected alot of problems in this car, thanks to the CD-ROM that I bought thru this site.
I have been reading thru some of the idle control system sections of the manual, and am having trouble making sense of whats there. For test equipment, I have a voltmeter, an oscilloscope, and a dwell meter. Its not much, but, its all I have. The engine tries to die everytime I put the car in drive or reverse. I can hold my foot on the gas pedal and keep the motor at about 1100 RPM and get it in gear. From then on, it will run fairly well. About all I have checked so far is the 10A fuse on the OVP relay. It was open, and did not blow a replacement. The original fuse looks like it just opened due to age. There is no indication that it melted. In fact, the fuse looks like it might have vibrated open. Visually, it looked good, but checked bad with the meter. Also, I tried another OVP relay that came from a running car. Also, tried my relay in this other car. No difference. Can you suggest what I need to check first? What is a common failure in this system? Slowly, this car is coming back from lack of proper maintenance and service for years. Gas mileage is slowly improving, too. Thanks for reading this. And, thanks in advance for any insight you can provide about this odd system. Bruce
