I'd try another set of batteries first. Perhaps cleaning the receiver cover (the black thing under the mirror) would help, especially if your car was owned by a heavy smoker.

As for the procedure above to disallow DAS, to get the car to start you would have to insert the key in the door and unlock the car. That's it.
