'00 E320 4matic front axle noise

My car is having front axle noises similar to what I heard when I had CV joint problems on my Japanese cars. My mechanic recommends that I change both axles but the noise is only coming from one side. I'm thinking that I only need to change one side since the cost is a whooping $900 per axle (part only). Any thoughts? Or, should I bite the bullet and replace both?

Start with the Known "bad" axle. Why replace a "good" part. But make sure that the boots on the other axle are still intact.

Thanks so much for the response. I felt the same too but just wanted to know for a Mercedes specialist.

Also, I too had a 16ver - loved it and regretted selling it.
