Need advice/recommendation for an OHM meter
Most of the engine switches and temp sensors have been replaced by my mechanic but there are three more I would like to test. I want to learn how do do this myself.
I read posts on you guys testing for resistance. Where would I look for resistance ratings for the sensor I would be testing? When testing a temp sensor, for example, the 34/42 celcius temp sensor, or others where would I get info on the sensors properties? What kind of testor equipment do you use? Or recommend. An OHM meter? Brand name or model would help. I can replace a steering box but this electrical stuff is new to me. Thanks in advance. Dan |

An ohmmeter is an included function of a 'multimeter', and most digital multimeters - such as the Sears model that also reads 'duty cycle' that is popular with folks here - have a decent ohmmeter section. In addition to the ohmmeter, digital multimeters have AC and DC voltmeter and ammeter ranges, and often other special functions like 'diode check', 'continuity check', capacitance measurement, etc. Look for a model that has a 10Amp range or higher, and can measure volts to a resolution of 1 mV or so. Some models that qualify are $30 or less on sale.

As far as the meter, "what he said". As far as the specs, I have found my local library to be a good source. I found out that they give free access to AllData (for what little it is sometimes worth) and also to Chilton Online and they also have a pretty good section of manuals on the shelf that are Mitchell I think.

go in with my USB thumb drive and suck up all the info i can....then go home and reconstitute the info into easy-to-search/index PDFs. hmmm, now am getting a crazy idea to test: dialing in my make/model and trying to download to thumbdrive, all the pages associated. i'll test it out...
