'99 E320 Rear Window Mechanism Repair or Replacement

I took off the door panel using the YOUTUBE site video instruction posted from Raymond on this site. Thank you so much. First time I have been on the YOUTUBE site. the directions were a snap to follow.

I isolated the rear window problem, after removing the door panel, to a broken window cable. I played with it for an hour after removing the motor (which works) trying to unraveling the window cable. I finally realized the cable was jambed at the top pulley where I couldn't get at it.

1.) How do I proceed?

2.) Importantly, how do I remove the window from channel it sits in w/o breaking it?

3.) After the window removal, do I drill out the rivets that hold the carrage (cabling, 2 pulleys, cable take up spool, elevation track, and the channel that holds the window pane)? I hope you can understand me, as I'm using laymans terms to describe this unit.

4.) Where can I source a replacement assembly, or can I respool the unit with a new cable?

Please advise me as a novice. this is my first Benz that I just bought. (1999 E320 w/ 100K miles)

Thanks everyone,
Mike

Usually the nylon rollers break which is why the cable gets all bent and bound up. Phil (buy parts tab above) has them as does eBay.

The top of the regulator is connected to the window by a small metal clip. Use a mirror and flashlight and you'll see it. Only the regulator/motor comes out; glass stays in place. Drill the rivets out to remove it. I used small nts and bolts to put the new one in as MB gives you a 3/16" stell rivet whihc is difficult to use.

I just did similar work on my C230 and it looks like it is pretty similar. They have some on Ebay for 54.00 for yours, you have to transfer your motor over which is the easy part. Leave the window up, drill out the 4 rivets with a 1/4" bit until the head comes off, then punch the rest through with a punch or nail or something (and hammer). A mirror helps a lot as was said, I bought an inspection mirror a long time ago (telescoping handle with swivel mirror on it) and I have used it many times. The regulator has a little square plastic "cam" that slides into an aluminum channel that is attached to the glass. There is a black clip that you pull off so you can slide it out. I bought the rivets but they were a pain (literally) to install as was said below. Bolts will work but make sure to use nylocks or locktite or something so they can NEVER get loose. One of them might be a little tricky to get on. Keep in mind this is my experience from the C series so I can't swear it is the same but same year and the regulator looks the same.

Is my '99 E320 a W210 version?

Mpolli, thanks for the heads up on the regulator on eBay.

I saw a regulator on eBay for a '98-03 E320 (W210).

I have a '99 E320 4 door sedan rear wheel drive.
Is mine a W210 as eBay states? I don't know what W210 means.

When you get the regulator make sure you get the correct side, right or left. As far as Wxxx that is the chassis designation basically. So you are fine with that. There is a chart somewhere that explains what is what. My car is a C230 which is a W202 for example. It is lingo you will see a lot on this site and others.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks to everyone who participated in helping this novice figure out the window problem. I ordered a new regulator on eBay today.

When it arives I will install it according to everyones help. I hope it goes smoothly without having to return here. Any last minute installation advice is greatly appreciated.

I hope the next time I post I will have a good report. The part should be here next week. See you then.

Mike

all done

Last weekend I did the repair according to everyones advice.
It went without a hitch. It was actually an enjoyable affair.

The door window regulator was easy to swap out and I used rivets to install the new one. I got the new one on eBay for $64 w/ shipping, it only took an hour to install, and I'm a total novice.

Now I'm going to post 2 more projects asking for advice. Again thanks for the advice from everyone.

Lord Bless
