Oil thread with a twist.
Grand prize goes to the person(s), that can correctly state the reasons for extended oil drain intervals.

Best Guess ('cause I really do not know) - So that new car owners would have the perception (perhaps falsely) that their new vehicles are more relaible; require less service? This tactic could be used to boost new car sales, if properly presented by the salesman.

We have a winner!
M-B Dude is a close second. It is all primarily about waste oil reduction. Something like 2 million gallons of waste oil produced in North America every day, with most of it coming from vehicle oilchanges. Also, as M-B Dude pointed out, it involves " peer-pressure " amongst the vehicle manufacturers. Same as going to 100 k miles sparkplug change intervals. ( Good luck trying to get a plug out of an aluminum head in 100 k miles ). Know anybody that has a vehicle where it takes 2.5 hours to change plugs, at $ 90.00 per hour? The manufacturers argument " Well, what are you *****ing about, it only needs to be done every 100 k miles "?

Because if you bother to send your 3k mile oil to the lab it will come back like new and still good for service. 8k-10k is very doable in most engines, even city driven ones. Modern engines are very easy on there oil, they don't really put as many combustions by products in it. Its been shown on the diesel forum that you can run 6k-8k miles on quality synthetic oil in a 603. If you can do that with a 603 I don't see why say 10k-13k miles would be out of the queston for a modern engine.
Most of this is just hear say. Lab's don't lie. Send your oil out to the lab and see what they say. If it comes back good for service at 3k miles why not extend to say 5k? Why spend the extra money for no gain?
