200 C230, can I replace the cluster?

Okay, it's a C230 that I'm looking at, and the milage doesn't jive. It's a repo, so it has a checkered past. I've been under it and through it, the only thing that has me worried it that when the car lot bought it at the repo auction, the cluster didn't light up, so they took it somewhere to get it fixed. The car is suppossed to have a black faced gage cluster, and it has a white faced cluster. All of the warning lights appear to work, but the low oil warning light comes on at -2.0 even though it's on the dipstick, and the gear indicator doesn't show up If I bought a black faced cluster on eBay, disconnected the battery, swapped the clusters, and connected battery, am I in buisiness? or does this require a trip to the dealer? Is the milage stored in the cluster or in the ECU? can the dealer make them match? Will the cluster learn the milage from the ecu automaticaly? Will the Falcons be worth a crap this year?

Thanks, Chuck, moving hear from the diesel forum.....

See Post #5 http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=198764 They (and only they?) can wipe the dash.

Afterwards, MB dealer can convince your car to recognise it using SDS laptop.

The guy selling it disclosed the milage issue. Said that he bought it at auction, that the milage display was blank, took it to a local guy who replaced the cluster, then to the local MBB dealer who did something and walla, it works, but the dash showes 32k miles, while car fax says it should have about 80k on it. Can the dealer hook up to it and see how many miles the ECU thinks it has?

The other issue, is I have white caces, and no gear display, and a light on the speedo that never lights up. Make me wonder if it came out of a manual shift car. Anyone know what W202 cars came with white face gages? It doesn't look like they are aftermarket stick ons.

Sounds like a convienient excuse provided by the seller due to the discrepancy.

The local guy probably managed to wipe it. Dealer (or local guy again) plugged in mileage using SDS. Suspect Dealer "ought" to check VMI reports to see history to attempt to verify mileage claim from owner? Perhaps one of the techs will chime in and confirm the proper procedure dealers are required to follow in these instances.

Makes one wonder what else might be tampered with or covered up. Poorly at that.....

That's an entry level car. There should be LOTS to choose from. I'd look for one with a history you can verify from a seller you can trust.

The fuel computer, electronic ignition switch, & the cluster ALL record the mileage on that & most MB's after 1998.
