sun roof stuck

hey guys, i got a 1987 300e and the sliding roof is stuck closed, when the switch is operated the motor turns a few revolutions and locks rotor, then will operate a few turns in the close direction and locks up again.
i have read the info on the cd manual and there is no instructions on how to get it open to the 3/4 position where one can start the cover removal.
any help is appreciated.

Check procedures 77-180 and 77-195 on the cd. Have you tried opening the sunroof with the emergency crank drive? You may need to remove the sunroof motor to inspect the gears to determine if its the sunroof motor or to check if its a cable issue.

Sometimes you can push up the rear of a roof equipped with the pop-up feature enough to get inside, an inch or two at the most, with the roof completely closed; if you can, you want to hold it up with something soft, then reach in toward the front edge between the headlining and the steel part of the roof, with something like a long screwdriver, and pop the four plastic push pins which hold the front of the liner to the roof panel loose, then you can push the sunroof portion of the headlining toward the rear far enough to expose the mounting bolts for the steel panel, 2 on each side, and remove the steel panel and access all the internal parts. You will probably find at least one of the slide brackets broken. Try not to keep messing with it so you don't ruin the cable guide, and it's not too bad to fix a sunroof. Hope this helps you.
