2000 E320 Engine Sudden Died Down

Guys,

My E320 was cold started and about 3 Kilo (2 miles) down the road the engine died down as if there was no supply of gas. The same thing happened three times with the first two I managed to restarted it in after 10 minutes; and it had no problem all day long. The third one happened 2 days ago and engine cannot start up again.

The mechanic told me today that I need a new crank position sensor and also an air mass meter. He quoted 750 dollars for both parts and labor. Now, i got two questions: 1. are these two parts causing the problem 2. is his charge of 750 OK?

Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Joe

Yes, the CPS is a common failure and your Air Mass Meter is probably faulty also. The price sounds about right for having it done at a garage. My CPS failed at around 75000 miles. My 2 cents.

The CPS can cause stalling or a non-start problem.

MOST air mass problems are related to hesitations & poor running not stalling.

Since both of these are very simply DIY, if it was me I would just buy the CPS sensor and replace it myself (about $100). The MAF will NOT cause engine to not start (as M.B.DOC said) so you don't have to replace it now.

If there are still code error afterward, you then can replace the MAF or just the insert (about $130)

Either way if you just look through some DIY, you can save a lot of money.

There have been comments about MAF inserts here before but they haven't panned out. Do you actually have a part number or source for this application.
Thanks, Dan

Excellent. Much cheaper than buying the whole unit.
Thanks, Da.
