Front Suspension Question

The Car...1988 300SEL (W126)

How much of the front suspension can I take apart before I have to start worrying about the front spring killing me?

Can I take off the Guide Rod and Bearing bracket? Can I take off the entire steering knuckle? How about the upper control arm? The reason I ask is the front end of this car really needs to be rebuilt and I'm wondering how much of it I can do myself and how much I'll have to pay a shop to do. The front end rebuild and dashboard replacement are the two big winter projects I have going this year.

You need to do a search on the subject of 126 suspension problems. You will get TONS of info, so bring a lunch. As to having someone tell you what can kill you and what won't,,,, if it is not clear on what to do,,,, DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are spring compressors for rent on this site. Rent one and be safe. Yes, you can keep the spring in, but it must be removed to replace the brake support rod bushing in the lower control arm. There is a tremendos amount of engery stored in the spring.
