If you had a problem with the alarm, I would think that the engine would not start at all.
To check this, go to the shut off element and check for vacuum (603 engine)... IF there is vacuum to the valve, the car is trying to shut it off. Then you have to check the solenoid to see if it is energized or if the solenoid is bleeding vacuum.
