The year of the car is important.

found that the w/s button was in w mode. would this cause this issue?

In the "W" mode the trans starts in second & has a lower (numerically) reverse ratio.

That wouldn't account for any noises.

found problem! fix or sell?

Hello Doc, thanks for your help.

A local reputable repair shop says that tranny issue can be fixed at a cost of appr. 1000.00.(leaking fluid, plugs fouled?) When taking apart they found that pieces of "bearing" was found and that tranny should be rebuilt at a cost of 3,000.
Question: vehicle has 129,000 mi. and has been serviced on a regular basis since we owned at 44,000 and has run great. Invest 3 and keep or sell and upgrade.
Are there other major issues with this model and year that may come up that you may know of?

Thanks again!!

A third option would be to install a used transmission. car-part.com has them for anywhere from $900 to $2400 for your application. How long were you planning on keeping the car before the transmission problem? If your answer was "indefinitely" then I'd get the rebuilt (adsitco.com has them for about $2700 but they aren't the only supplier out there). If you were only looking to get a couple more years from the car I might install a used one and save $1000.

Keep in mind that you wont get anywhere near what the car is worth if you try to sell it with a broken transmission. That's a guaranteed way to lose money.
