Is it an easy swap?

Just saw a C280 at a used car dealer shop with the unusual AMG look! it got the AMG dash/two tone steering wheel, sport seat front and rear but missing the SL600 front brake disc and the 17" amg rim... the car run 16" now!

I run the vin check and it comes out a C36!

open the hood i see the M104 engine but it is no way for me to tell if it is a 2.8 or a 3.6. i check the engine number and it is not match with the vin check web site.....

so my question is, is it a very swap a 3.6 back to a 2.8? how about the wiring? the computer?
thx

The C36 was a M104 2.8L engine with the same engine number & then AMG punched it out to 3.6L ! NO easy to see if the engine is a C36 OR a regular 2.8L.

Measuring the capacity of the cylinder would be the easiest way & that requires special measuring equipment.

thx MB DOC
i jsut wondering if it is easy to swap the engine? how about the computer and other wiring... coz the car looks so C36 (the vin said it is a C36) but the dealer keep saying it is a C280, so i am a little lost here......

i checked the ECU location (whick located at the top right hand corner of the engine compartment, i saw like 3 computer slot... while C280 only has one slot... however i have still no idea to tell if it is a C36 or C280)

LIke I posted earlier..the C36 started life as a C280!

Then the car was shipped to AMG & they made the car into a C36...

SO the CHASSIS number is the same as a c280 & so is the engine number!

The VIN is the only way to see if the car IS a C36..The engine number must match that chasis number

Tell the dealer to perform a VMI on the car, so they can see what that car really IS.

The vin said it is a C36, but the engine number doesnt match......
So my question will be, is it easy to swap the engine? is it just like changing the engine only? (so you can keep the rest, say the ECU, the dash board....)

I don't get it...
Are you saying it's a C36 that's been swapped to a 2.8 engine and you want to swap back to a C36? Or are you saying you want to change it from a C36 to a C280? Maybe you're running the wrong VIN, or the VIN tool you have is wrong. I'm sure the dealer would mark it as a C36 if it were a C36. Used car dealers are required (by law) to give full disclosure of a vehicle so, if it has had an engine change to a non-stock (IE: Not what it was sold with) model, they have to tell you!

the car is not in US, it is in HK and it is a grey import!
The dealer said it is a C280 with 2.8 engine but C36 int.
but in fact (well, from the vin) it is a C36!

However, it seems there's no easy way i can tell if the engine is a 2.8 or 3.6...

Drive it, if it is a 3.6 liter engine now, you should be able to tell fairly easy, brain to foot, foot to floor.
