Not sure if this was discussed yet, but in my experience you should NEVER refill the radiator and run the engine soon after losing coolant. The temperature differential could blow the head gasket. Think about it - suddenly circulating cool water through a red-hot cylinder head - yikes!!! I have seen more than one head gasket blown this way...

While the distance to home may have been three miles, I was watching the temperature indicator, and it was not rising dramatically. When I opened the hood I did not notice an engine that was abnormally hot. (Not that I tried to figure out how hot was abnormally hot.)
