Exclamation w202 overheating

i'm a newbie to this forum , and i would like to ask you guys for help.
i have a w 202 based c 180 (65000km on the clock). a few weeks ago i had an over heating problem, it turned out that my visco fan needed replacement so i have i replaced. the problem was solved.
last week i had an oil change, i normally use mobil super s but since i was on vacation and the shop didnt sell mobil 1 products so i used petronas synthium because i read that it has MB certification.
but now everythime i got on the freeway or climbing up some steep road the temperature would rise to over 110 degrees (centigrade) it even went on to 120 on some occasions. when i'm back to level road it will drop back to around 90-100.
i tried replacing the radiator cap, checked the auxiliary fans and they turned out to be okay.
what's the problem wiht my car.
ps: i always use 95 octane gas.
help please

Is the coolant level in the expansion tank correct?

When you checked the auxiliary fans, did you check to make sure they were turning in the right direction? I know it sounds stupid of me to say that, but I have heard of more than one occassion when the auxiliary fans were removed for some reason, and when they were replaced the connector plug is put in backwards, resulting in the fans turning backwards. Your fans should pull cold air in from the outside across the radiator. If they are reversed they will be pulling hot engine bay air across the radiator, which will only heat the car up more. Were the fans removed when you replaced the viscous clutch?

If the fans are going in the right direction, I would look at the thermostat. It might not be opening fully so you aren't getting proper circulation, which would lead to the car heating up when it is under more load (ie on the highway or going uphill). It could also be your radiator going bad, which wouldn't be out of the ordinary for a car of the W202's age.

I don't think this has anything to do with your choice of oil, unless the oil has been dramatically underfilled.

Just to expand on jlomon's thermostat comment. The thermostat is a two way valve. Fully closed it allows quick warm-up by sealing off the radiator system and short-circulates the coolant back through the engine. When the coolant is very hot, it seals off the short-circulating passage to the engine and forces all the coolant through the radiator. When the coolant is neither cold nor very hot, some the coolant short circulates and the rest goes through the radiator depending on intermediate thermostat valve position.

Thermostats can fail open closed or halfway.

OK, that's the theory. But the thermostat is an "el cheapo" throwaway part (about $20) and can be easily changed in 30 minutes. They also seem to fail soon after been involved in any overheating. It looks like your next step?

This is the Coolant flow diagram for the M104 engine. But it clearly shows the function of the thermostat.

1. Good luck with the new thermostat!

2. The Service manual is sometimes sold on Ebay. I don't think it exists in digital form, but the Repair Manual does exist on CD and can be bought on Ebay.

3. The C36 rides fast and low! Great for the highways, and smooth roads. But I think it might be too low for the village roads in West Java.

4. They did make a special version C36 for Indonesia with a different Engine Control Unit. I know of one owned by a member of another forum who lives in Indonesia.

I don't know about digital, but you can purchase a Haynes manual for the W202 chassis. It was published in the UK, but this might be closer for you:

Haynes offices in Sydney. 02 9740 6766 ask for Chris Anderson or Phill lee.

I used this manual and it shows you pretty much everything you need to do on the car. The good thing for you is that this manual supports your 1.8 litre 4 cylinder motor. It does not support my 2.8 litre I6 but I have used it for numerous body/suspension/brake issues. It has been invaluable when combined with this forum.

Good luck and let us know how the theromstat works out.

just changed the thermostat guys and now the car runs like a normal merc again i.e. temperature goes up abit on traffic jam and slow traffic but drops as soon as the car got more airflow. also, unlike before, now the temp gauge would drop even when the merc climbs. thanks guys really thanks alot.

oz: that friend of yours must be a real wealthy guy. here, even driving my bottom end 202, invites stares of envy from people. does the same thing happen to u with ur c?

jlomon: how much your manual costs?

i got a buddy who drives an evo vii, and u know what guys, i think given the same power to weight ratio the 202 chassis would perform as good as the evo, even w/o all wheel drive. the 5 link suspension is incredible, they keep the tires planted no matter what u do on the corner. agree?
