W210 Foglight Connector /Repair Harness
I got the MB harness repir kit (A000 540 21 05) for fixing the dodgy solder connections at the foglamp. It looks like you cut the wire and crimp two terminals on to attach the new piece.
Any words of wisdom from anyone who's done this before?

Post any and all info you have. I have a 202, but have the same issue with fogs. Wasn't aware of MB repair kits

I can post a picture later, but the best deal I've seen on it yet is at
oempartsdirect, at around $23.

Yes, use petroleum jelly on the connections or seal with heatshrink, because it gets wet in there.

And the answer is ...
Remove the headlight trim piece! Two 8mm bolts (and careful detaching of part of the rubber seal) and you have good access to replace the harness.
The connectors are solder type, btw. After I removed the trim piece it was as straightforward as can be. One wire color didn't match, but set up the connector to mate brown with brown. Now that I've given you the answer, it should take you 15-20 minutes. Detach wire at foglamp, push wire up, remove trim piece, cut, solder, wrap, connect connectors, test. Assembly is the reverse. On the picture, I've already cut the wire (leaving enough for me to get to it easily), and the trim piece is off the picture to the right, still attached to the bottom rubber seal.

Soldering the connector pins
The instructions above are rather thorough. The only thing I will add is to avoid letting any solder run into the part of the connector barrel into which the male connector pins fit. The tolerance is necessarily close and any solder in the barrel will prevent proper mating of the connector. For those who read instructions after doing the job, the solder-on connector pins are part number 003-545-06-26 with dealer list price of US$1.80 each.

Re: Harness Kit A000 520 21 05
Anyone know if this kit is still available? I'm assuming the referenced part number is an MB part number as apposed to a PP part number. Perhaps we're just the 'unlucky' ones whose socket didn't melt for twelve years. |

While I don't have part numbers I believe there are actually two kits. One with a pigtail connector for soldering into the harness and one with a molded plug in connector. Check your vehicle to see if you have the plug in connector to save time.
