Need 560SL airbag control module

Thanks to MBDOC and Deanyel for helping me find my missing diagnostic port and for links to building a code reader. My code reader indicates that I've got a bad airbag control module. The only part number that comes up is 000 820 02 97, but a footnote shows this as the part through model year 1987. There is no other part number shown and no information about my 1988 model year. Cost is around $400.

I've got several questions. Does anyone know for sure if this is the correct part for me? Are there any other sources for this part or does anyone test and/or rebuild these things? I'd hate to try a used unit, because it may be bad too, unless of course I could pick one up for a song.

According to some other posts I've seen, replacement is a very simple job.

Thanks.

That part number is off the EPC? Can you get the part number off the car? Enter that part number below and it shows as 87 to 89. The EPC has flaws now and then.

Yes, I did get it off of the EPC. Both the 2001 or so edition I have as well as the current free one both list it as I noted above. I checked the price on the website you mentioned, but never noticed the note there about 1987 - 1989. Thanks for pointing that out - makes me feel better. I haven't looked at the one in my car yet. I want to give it one more chance to reset the code, but I'm not hopeful

on that car there is a voltage generator for the srs module behind the side panel on left side of car [behind seat] someone in their wisdom mounted it right side up so that water could get in to it.i turn them around[there is enough wire] BUT on several occasions i have found this part to be the offender good luck.p.s. codes were petty barbaric in those days.

David - when you found the voltage generator to be the problem, did that show up on the code reader? The reason I ask is that the only code showing up is for the airbag control module which is the unit behind the climate control buttons AFAIK. There are also codes for what is called an airbag resistor and one for the voltage supply. I'm wondering if one of the other codes would indicate the voltage generator?

Thaks for the reply.
